The Arya Samaj was founded on April 7, 1875 in Bombay, India by Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati. The purpose was to move Hindu Dharma away from all fictional beliefs and back to the teachings of the Vedas. The Arya Samaj rejects all forms of ritualistic superstitions such as idolatry, ancestor worship, pilgrimage and animal sacrifice, as well as all forms of social oppression such as the caste system, untouchability and child labour.

This was in response to the negatives of organized religion and its emphasis on ritual. Swami Dayanand enlightened the masses against idol worship, superstition, irrational behavior as dictated by temple priests and other vested interests. He promoted universal brotherhood based on Vedic teachings in their true essence.

It proclaims equal rights under the law between men and women, seeks to reduce poverty and protect the weak and disadvantaged, condemns the consumption of meat and the use of intoxicating substances and recreational drugs, and promotes a healthy social, family and private life. in harmony with natural cycles. The Arya Samaj emphasizes the universal and comprehensive nature of Vedic knowledge and its power to rejuvenate and redeem a troubled and weary humanity.
